Strength, suppleness, balance & vitality.
About our studio
At Amity Pilates, we believe in the profound impact that Classical Pilates can have on your mind, body, and spirit. Rooted in the original teachings of Joseph Pilates, this method provides a balanced approach to movement, offering physical strength, mental clarity, and emotional wellness.
Why Classical Pilates?
Classical Pilates isn’t just about exercise—it’s a transformative journey. It’s about creating a stronger, more flexible body while developing a deeper mind-body connection. Through controlled movements and precise techniques, Pilates helps you:
Build Core Strength: The foundation of Pilates is a powerful, engaged core—vital for posture, stability, and overall functional strength.
Enhance Flexibility & Mobility: By focusing on lengthening muscles and increasing joint mobility, Pilates helps you move with ease and grace, reducing stiffness and tightness.
Improve Balance & Coordination: Pilates strengthens the muscles responsible for balance, coordination, and agility, which can improve your everyday activities.
Restore Alignment & Posture: It encourages proper body alignment, helping to relieve tension, prevent injuries, and maintain a healthy posture in daily life.
Boost Mental Clarity: The focus on breath and movement encourages mindfulness, which leads to better stress management, focus, and relaxation.
What Makes Classical Pilates Different?
Unlike contemporary Pilates, which often incorporates modern techniques or variations, Classical Pilates stays true to Joseph Pilates’ original exercises and apparatus. The methods we use are grounded in the full system of Pilates, designed to:
Provide a comprehensive approach to fitness and wellness.
Maintain the integrity of the original movements and philosophies.
Offer a deep, mindful practice that connects body, mind, and spirit.

ABOUT GEMMA
Meet Gemma Duff – Founder of Amity Pilates
Gemma has been teaching Pilates since 2002, facilitating classes across Melbourne and the Bellarine Peninsula. Over the years, Gemma has developed a deep understanding and respect for the Pilates method, having evolved from contemporary training to a commitment to the Classical Pilates system, also known as Contrology—the method originally developed by Joseph Pilates himself.
A Journey of Continual Learning
Gemma’s Pilates journey began with training in the contemporary Pilates system, where she gained a foundational understanding of the method. However, her desire to explore the authentic teachings of Joseph Pilates led her to further her education in the classical system of Pilates. She has studied under renowned instructors both in Australia & internationally in an ongoing journey to deepen her knowledge & understanding of Contrology.
People who studied directly with Joseph & Clara Pilates, and then went on to teach his method to others, are called Elders in the Pilates community. Each Elder has a slightly different perspective of the work. Gemma’s learning has primarily followed elder Jay Grimes teachings.
Her commitment to the authenticity of Classical Pilates is reflected in her ongoing study and practice of the method, which continues to shape the work at Amity Pilates. By historical lineage Gemma is qualified as a 3rd generation teacher.
